Before a movie hits the theaters, i'm pretty sure it *has* to be rated in some form. When it says "not yet rated", that just means the rating is pending (its being decided).

You are asking two different questions. A movie can be "not yet rated" if it is still in post-production and has not been rated yet by the MPAA. A movie that has already been released to dvd without a rating is called "unrated" and it has content that was not allowed to be included in the theatrical version due to its adult nature (either sex or violence). In which case you need to be 18 to purchase them from any store. You won't find any "unrated" movies in theaters. On the flip side of the coin, there are also movies made up until the 60s and 70s that are unrated and don't have any or very little offensive content in them, but the MPAA was not around yet at that time.

This is a trick question.a film like "American Pie" in an "unrated" edition means you have to be 17 or older. However, otehr films are unrated, as they came out long before the MPAA rating system and have no real equivalent to now, although most would be PG-13 or so

Like those movies that are "Not yet rated" like american pie, its not 'yet' rated even though it came out on dvd already...So how old do you have to be to watch a not rated movie in the theaters?
